The words Covid-19, unprecedented times and pivot are words that have been heard to nauseum this year. It has been a year of great uncertainty for many families, business owners, suppliers and stakeholders. The feeling of isolation has caused significant mental health challenges for individuals in lock down. Dealing with change inevitably is challenging, but when you do not have a time frame of how long a situation will last for, it can create overwhelming stress. Prolonged stress of course starts to impact us emotionally, mentally and physically. We are social creatures that need companionship. This year has shown us the importance of connection and supporting each other and local business owners. Tom Ford perfectly stated “The most important things in life are the connections you make with others.”
Technology has been invaluable to connect to family and friends globally, it has put into perspective what is important for many individuals. It is not about the volume of followers, the hashtags or number of likes, but rather the meaning of the connection.
It has been the importance of feeling heard, wanted, needed, loved and connected to in times of great uncertainty. Grappling for the last toilet rolls on the shelf has become a distant memory. Neighbours have started to reach out to each other and learn their names and show kindness. Community have come together to support local businesses and encourage buying Australian products. “There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about” – Margaret J Wheatley.
The path is still unknown but the road ahead is brighter together, supporting each other, lending a hand and reaching out in times of difficulty. The world we live in today has changed and may never go back to what we knew. The lessons we have learnt is time is precious, do what you love and love what you do. Make time to spend with family and friends, it is about making memories. If you feel like your light has turned off and you are in a dark place, let someone know. Community provides us with a sense of belonging, it supports our mental health and can provide purpose. Social fulfilment and fostering social engagement within the community is fundamental in our everyday lives.
